Rob-B-Hood Press Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

by Chia-Li

Event : Press Conference of “Rob-B-Hood”
Date : 16 September 2006
Venue : Carlton Conference Centre, Kuala Lumpur

At 3:40pm, director Benny Chan, Jackie Chan and Victoria, carrying baby Matthew Medvedev (BB) entered the conference room full of reporters and clicking cameras…..

*Jackie started tapping on the backdrop to attract BB’s attention…*

After much greetings from Benny and Jackie, the press conference was kicked off with the first question directed at Jackie…

Q : Why do you choose to play the role of a bad guy this time?
Jackie : I’m a good “bad guy”…I always wanted to do something different and play the role of a bad guy…even as a bad guy, we should not do things that could harm others, we should also have our responsibility towards the community…

Q : The baby is the main actor in the movie and it is quite difficult to look for a baby main actor. How do you managed to cast BB?
Benny : It’s a miracle that we’ve found BB. Thousands of babies came for the audition but none was suitable for the role. The assistant director saw baby Matthew on the MRT and right away asked Victoria if she was interested…

Q : How long did it took you to finally find the right baby?
Benny : About half a year.

Q : How was filming with BB?
Benny : The first day of filming is okay, but on the second day onwards the baby would cry whenever it was his turn to “action”. For every shot, we would have to wait for him to be in the right mood…

Jackie : The baby is not like a tiger, we can’t beat him to train him…he is like a king…

*If you are wondering why the lack of comment from Jackie, it is because he was busy playing with BB…*

*BB looked like he is scared of Jackie*

Benny : The baby is now recalling who we are…it’s been a few months since we have finished filming…

*BB looked sleepy…*

Q : In the movie, the baby had to suck on Jackie’s nipple…
Jackie : We had to put some honey on so that the baby would bite it…

Q : Did you shot the scenes of the baby separately?
Benny : Yes, and because of that we’ve wasted a lot of money.

Q : How did you come up with the idea of acting as the bad guy in Rob-B- Hood?
Benny : Jackie came up with the idea to act as a bad guy, and he had to steal something that is priceless…like a baby…

Q : Do you initially wanted to cast a baby boy or a baby girl?
Benny : Baby boy comes to mind first…

Jackie : Actually both baby boys and girls came for the audition, our main requirement was an adorable baby.

Q : How do you feel when Jackie wanted to cast BB for the role?
Victoria: Happy…

Jackie : Victoria once cried at the stairs during filming after she saw how tired her baby was…As a mother, she has to look after her baby 24…we were worried she might call it quits. The crew helped look after the baby as well. It was especially difficult to get the baby to act or laugh during filming…the baby only act after we’ve ran out of films! Luckily, it was finally completed.

*Jackie gave a sip of water to BB…*

Q : Was it fun being a bad guy in the movie?
Jackie : Yeah, it was. You get to talk and walk like a bad guy. You can do nasty things…It’s very challenging acting as a bad guy.

Q : Why did you get Louis Koo to act as one of the supporting role?
Jackie : Louis can act…acting in a movie requires much experience.

Q : Jackie plays a different role everytime he acts in a Benny Chan film – so what is the next film going to be? And the role for Jackie?
Benny : For this movie, we finally came up with Jackie’s role in the middle of the night…we do not know when we can come up with another role for Jackie…

Q : Jackie, you seemed to be very affectionate towards BB. Does he remind you of your son when he is young? You are very busy at that time when he was young…
Jackie : Yes…and there is this song in the movie called “Pa Ma De Ku Hei” which was composed to reminiscence the time when parents have to look after their kids when they are little…Through this movie, children will understand the hardships of becoming parents…

Q : How was it working with BB?
Jackie : It was a very different experience altogether…sometimes we spent two days for one shot and sometimes one day for no shot! The baby just refuses to do anything in front of the camera…

Q : Is there going to be a part 2?
Benny : Oh no, it was very hard to look for another baby, plus it was a lot of work…

Q : What was the budget spent for the production of the movie?
Benny : Wow, a lot, we are still counting…Too much money have been spent for the production of the movie…

Q : Was Victoria at the set all the time? And what type of baby BB is?
Victoria: Yes, I was at the set all the time…BB is generally a very happy baby but would sometimes throw tantrums…

Jackie : All of us can look at the baby for the whole day because he is very adorable…

Q : Was BB’s teeth all formed during filming?
Jackie : No, BB’s teeth only started coming out towards the end of filming…

*At this point, BB started crying and Jackie started demonstrating how to stop the crying by calling BB’s name…but to no avail…*

*Victoria has to bring BB go walk around…*

Q : Can you share with us on becoming a dad?
Jackie : As a father, I have no patience. I am not a good dad because all my time were devoted to my career. Benny on the contrary is a good family man. He brings his family out to the beach and the amusement park. But my family would regard me as a good dad because they understand that my hard work is for the family…

Q : Would you cooperate on a project with your son Jaycee in the near future?
Jackie : I don’t think so. So far, we have only collaborated on a song.

Q : Would you fear of an argument with your son if both of you worked together?
Jackie : He (my son) cannot beat me in an argument…

Q : What were the most difficult stunts that you had to perform with BB?
Jackie : The running mostly as children’s bones are very fragile…It is also difficult during the walking on the roller-coaster’s track. We have wires on me as a safety precaution. I cannot afford to fall. I have to hold very tightly to the baby. We cannot always use a dummy as well…

Q : Yeah, the baby has a lot of “dangerous” scenes in the movie…
Jackie : During the filming of those scenes, we have a lot of people standing by just in case anything happens. We also have safety measures for our crew members. Both time and money are important but what’s most important is the safety of my crew members. One need to help one’s company save money, but one also need to look after the well-being of the staffs.

Benny : We have also used a lot of shooting techniques especially for the car chase scenes. We even have a few similar looking babies as back-ups.

Q : Other than stunts, the movie displayed issues on relationships as well…and there was this funny execution scene towards the end of the movie…who thought of those ideas?
Benny : Couldn’t recall…sometimes we thought of the ideas as we were on the set…

Jackie : We wanted a happy ending for the movie. Of course, someone who did a crime cannot be let off just like that, that is why the characters have to go to jail…but they were let off with lesser jail term due to good behaviour…

Q : How was the filming of the dying scene at the end (BB was frozen but was later revived)?
Jackie : We have a lot of difficulties filming that scene. We have to cry and at the same time someone would have to “poke” the baby from underneath (for the electric shock resuscitation part). Whenever BB gets “poked” he would wake up and we would have to stop shooting…we have used 3 nights just to shoot that particular scene…at that time it was quite frustrating…

As the end note, Jackie thanked all Malaysian fans and to all the reporters present, “please give your views on whatever that you like or don’t like about the movie”. Jackie added that “There is a message in every movie and for this one, it is to choose to do good in every situation”.

Jackie also offered a parting gift – he carried BB and ran around the room twice to everyone’s surprise to pacify BB when he started crying. We would probably never gonna see anything like that again…
