Jackie Chan’s Cafe in Kuala Lumpur

HONG KONG superstar Jackie Chan has set up shop in Kuala Lumpur! 

No, he is not opening a cinema for his famous martial art films. Instead, the popular plucky actor has opened a coffeehouse named after himself called the Jackie Chan’s Cafe. The spirited Jackie was in town recently to launch the cafe on the Muse Floor (Level 6) of the Starhill Gallery. Hundreds of his fans were at the Starhill Gallery to greet him when he arrived to open his first lifestyle cafe in Malaysia.

The Assembly Wows Pusan Film Festival


Chinese veteran director Feng Xiaogang’s war epic film “Assembly” received an overwhelming welcome when it premiers at the 12th Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) on October 4.

China’s portal website Sina reported that all 7,000 tickets to the screening were sold out in 17 minutes when put on sale.

Being the opening presentation of PIFF, the film was highly spoken of by both movie critics and ordinary viewers.

The film is set against the backdrop of the Chinese civil war in the late 1940s, but viewers can glimpse humanity among the ruthless battles, sina quoted a Pusan-based newspaper as saying.

Although it is a typical Chinese film featuring Chinese actors and featuring Chinese history, it can still touch people, a movie critic from the professional magazine CINE21 commented.

The movie’s official website will open on October 8 and director Feng Xiaogang will share his experiences at the film festival with Chinese Netizens on the site.

Run Run Shaw Turns 100


Hong Kong entertainment guru Run Run Shaw became a centenarian on Thursday.

His 100th birthday will be celebrated with a ceremony on Thursday evening in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of Hong Kong Television Broadcasts Limited, better known as TVB, which is a dominant producer of long-running Cantonese TV dramas.

Shaw, who still serves as TVB’s executive chairman, co-founded the empire in November, 1967.

He also co-founded another company, Shaw Brothers, in 1930. Since then it has contributed enormously to the Hong Kong martial-arts film industry. Its well-known productions include One-Armed Swordsman (1967), Five Fingers of Death (1972), and Five Deadly Venoms (1978).

The film and television tycoon is also a generous philanthropist, financing several schools in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland. Many universities have buildings named after him.

He also set up the Shaw Prize, which has been dubbed the “Asian Nobel Prize.”

Run Run Shaw attributes his longevity to regular exercise and his media career.
