Sammo Hung’s Encounters of the Spooky Kind (a.k.a Spooky Encounters) wasn’t
quite the first film to incorporate action, comedy and horror together in a Hong Kong production (that honour goes to Lau Kar-Leungs Spiritual Boxer which was made five years earlier), but Spooky Encounters was certainly the film that defined the genre and made way for many more films of its kind, including the Mr Vampire series.

Synopsis
Produced by Taka Ichise (Ring, Dark Water), five of Japan’s top horror directors, including Takashi Shimizu (The Grudge) and Norio Tsuruta (Ring 0: Birthday) contribute to this anthology of terrifying short films.

Beautiful Boxer (THAI 1999)

Synopsis
Based on the real life story of Parinya Charoenphol (Nong Toom), a Muaythai boxer who underwent a sex change operation to become a woman. The movie chronicles her life from a young boy who likes to wear lipstick and wear flowers to her sensational career as kickboxer whose specialty is ancient Muaythai boxing moves which she can execute expertly with grace and finally her confrontation with her own sexuality which led to her sex change op.

Geochilmaru: The Showdown (KOREA 2005)

Synopsis
A martial arts website hosts discussions on different aspects of fighting styles and techniques. Through the website a mysterious and legendary fighter called Geochilmaru invites eight martial arts masters to meet him for a competition. No-one has ever met Geochilmaru or even seen him before. The group drive up into a secluded mountain together where they are told that only one of them will face Geochilmaru and they must decide between them who this one person will be. They all agree that the best way to decide is to fight each other. The winner of each fight will takes the loser’s necklace and only the person who holds all of the eight necklaces will finally get to meet the mysterious host of the competition…

Synopsis
The gruesome murders of three pregnant women bear a resemblance to murders committed by killer Shin Hyun. The only problem for the police is that at the time of the killings Shin was locked up in prison and so they fear that a copy-cat killer is loose. Detectives Kim and Kang are partnered up to solve the case. Due to a lack of evidence, the detectives have no choice but to go to the prison and talk to Shin to see what he knows about the killings….
